Bobcat Rodeo Teams Split Season's First Weekend, Head to Glendive

Veterans perform well amidst talented youngsters
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State and UM Western took turns winning at two rodeos hosted by Northwest (Wyoming) College last weekend.
The Bobcats won the women's competition of the first rodeo and the men's competition of the second, with UMW mirroring those results. The two rodeos, held September 9 and 10 in Powell, Wyoming, kicked off the National Intercollegiate Rodeo (NIRA) Big Sky Region fall season.
Bobcat coach Kyle Whitaker said the results don't tell the whole story. "We're a lot younger team this year," Montana State's second year head coach said, "and it takes a while to get acclimated to college rodeo. Last year we had one freshman on the men's roster, and this year we have two on the (group designated to score points)."
While the freshmen provided the most intrigue for Whitaker last weekend, the improvement of veterans was most encouraging. "We had some guys really step up and show improvements," he said. "That was great to see."
Returner MSU's Tayla Moeykens captured all-around honors in the first rodeo, finishing second in rodeo two. The senior won barrel racing in rodeo one. Alexis McDonald finished second in that event in the first rodeo, while Paige Rasmussen was second in the goat tying in that event before winning the breakaway roping of the second rodeo.
Cody Faulkner, competing with a hand injury, took men's all-around honors in the second rodeo by finishing second in both saddle bronc riding and steer wrestling. Whitaker was impressed. "He had that injury and was really limited in practice so I didn't think I could put him on the point-scoring team (in the first rodeo). But he was really impressive."
MSU's Cole Detton won the steer wrestling. Caleb Meeks won saddle bronc riding of rodeo one, while Bode Spring took top honors of steer wrestling of the first rodeo ahead of second place Mike Nannini. "Bode Spring is a junior who really improved a lot (over the summer). That's what I like to see."
The Bobcat men's and women's teams head to Glendive for the Dawson Community College Rodeo on September 16-17. Whitaker said that time in the practice arena and continuing evaluation of his newest team members rise to the top of the to-do list at this time of year. "We just want to keep fine-tuning them, let them know what to expect in the next rodeo," he said. "And for me, it's a matter of getting the right people on the (scoring roster)."
