BOZEMAN, Mont. – There will be plenty of Blue and Gold in action across the state of California this weekend as the Bobcat track and field program opens its outdoor season in a pair of meets in the Los Angeles area.
Montana State is set to bring a slew of competitors to participate in both the Redlands Invitational and Franson Classic. The University of Redlands will host the Bobcats in Redlands, Calif., with the Redlands Invite taking place Friday afternoon. The Franson Classic, hosted by Azusa Pacific University, begins on Saturday morning.
"We are very excited to get the outdoor season started," said Lyle Weese, Montana State's Dale Kennedy Director of Track and Field. "We felt like we had a really solid indoor season, but we have a lot of individuals that excel in events that are only contested outdoors.
"We also have a few individuals like Alex Hellenberg and Alec Nehring that didn't have eligibility indoors that were waiting to compete. So, we're looking forward to outdoor competition as well as adding in a few high performers into those outdoor events."
The meets in California will open an outdoor season for the Bobcats that features six weekends of competition. The regular season schedule worth of meets will gear Montana State up for the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships that run from May 11-14 in Pocatello, Idaho.
"It's early obviously, but we've got some really good marks from early meets in the past," Weese said. "We're excited about what we can do right off the bat. We're hoping to start strong so that we can finish even stronger."
Montana State's lone home meet of the outdoor season takes place on Saturday, April 9. The NCAA Championships close out the track and field season in Eugene, Ore., with the national meet taking place from June 8-11.
