MSU drops contest to Lady Griz for first time in four years
Offense came slow for both teams Saturday, but when Montana's got going the Bobcats had a tough time keeping up.
Carmen Gfeller scored a career high 34 points and frontcourt-mate Abby Anderson added 12 to lead the Lady Griz to a 71-57 win over Montana State in Missoula on Saturday. The victory was UM's first over the Bobcats in more than four years.
Montana State's tough offensive start, it turned out, was too much to overcome. Neither team scored until Darian White hit a short jumper three minutes and one second into the game, and UM led 9-8 after the first period. "It was a tough first quarter for sure," said MSU coach Tricia Binford. "That set the tone for sure."
After scoring two points in the first quarter Gfeller poured in 15 in the second. The junior netted her 34 points on 11-for-16 shooting. "She had a great game," Binford said. "I thought we got better ball pressure on her at our place, but she got comfortable and really got rolling."
While Anderson wasn't as prolific as Gfeller, she was more efficient. The senior hit six of her seven shots, grabbed five boards, and dished out five assists.
Montana State was led by sophomores Lexi Deden and Leia Beattie. Deden scored 14 points on 5-10 shooting and grabbed four rebounds, while Beattie scored 13 points with seven rebounds. "Lexi for us really got us going offensively," Binford said.
MSU's long-time head coach said Saturday's loss will fuel her team. "We're going to learn that we play our best basketball when we play together," Binford said. "I thought our kids competed, but sometimes you can play so hard that you don't play with the other four players on the floor. We'll learn from this and get back to sharing the ball and getting good shots."
Montana State falls to 13-5 in Big Sky play, 18-10 overall, and hold on to second place in the Big Sky behind Idaho State (15-4 in the league). UM is 11-7 in the Big Sky, 18-9 overall. The Cats finish the regular season at Sacramento State on Thursday and Northern Colorado on Saturday.
