For the third consecutive year the Montana State University volleyball team was honored for its works in the classroom earning 2021 United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic award.
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale. It marked the sixth time in program history that the Bobcats have been honored for its work in the classroom. MSU also won the award in 2002, 2003, 2010, 2012, 2019, and 2020. The AVCA started recognizing team academic excellence during the 1992-93 season.
"This is what it's all about," said MSU fifth-year head coach Daniel Jones. "Not only are we excelling as a team on the court, but we are doing it in the classroom too. Of all the awards we've got over the years this is the one I am most proud of. To do it three years in a row, especially with all the challenges that we have faced as country, community, and team over the past 12 months, I couldn't be prouder."
In all, 1,275 collegiate and high school teams earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic award for the 2020-2021 season. Over 50% of the AVCA membership in all three NCAA divisions won the award, including a new record of 243 DI programs.
"We are learning how to be elite in life, not just on the court and not just in the classroom, but in all aspects of our lives," Jones said. "When it all comes together, it's something special. It's a legacy we can all be proud of."
This spring, fourteen Bobcats earned all-Big Sky Conference Academic kudos. Ten of the league's 11 schools earned USMC/AVCA academic recognition.
