Montana State Track & Field Season Ends at U.S. Olympic Team Trials

Montana State’s showing at the United States Olympic Team Trials for track and field was completed on Friday, June 25, at Hayward Field with four athletes having competed through the week.
EUGENE, Ore. – Montana State's showing at the United States Olympic Team Trials for track and field was completed on Friday, June 25, at Hayward Field with four athletes having competed through the week.
Bobcat women's high jumper Lucy Corbett opened the Olympic Trials with her appearance in the qualifying round on June 18. Corbett, who a week prior earned Second Team All-America honors in the event, cleared two bars in her latest event. She was unable to clear 6-01.50 (1.87m), but her best mark of 5-11.50 (1.82m) tied her second best height of her career. Corbett finished 16th overall out of 25 competitors.
Corbett completed her sophomore season of eligibility which was highlighted with her trip to the Olympic Trials and to the NCAA Championships. She was the Big Sky champion in the high jump with her school-record clearance of 6 feet.
Duncan Hamilton continued his impressive calendar year of competition starting with his first round race at the Olympic Trials in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hamilton completed the seventh fastest time of Monday's event schedule by setting a new school-record time 8 minutes, 25.70 seconds. It qualified him for the finals on Friday which Hamilton took 14th coming in at 8:45.67. That mark was still the sixth fastest steeplechase race Hamilton has run in his career.
The Bozeman native ended his 2020-21 athletic year with trips to the NCAA Division I Cross Country, Indoor Track and Field and Outdoor Track and Field Championships as well as the Olympic Trials. The two-time Big Sky champion set a new program record in the steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Championships en route to claiming a fifth-place finish and First Team All-America accolades.
Drake Schneider made his Olympic Trials debut on Thursday in the men's 400 hurdles first round. Schneider took the final qualifying spot for the semifinals as he placed 16th overall by crossing the line in 50.67 seconds. He eventually took 14th in the semifinals with a mark of 50.89 seconds. Those times were his third and fourth fastest, respectively, of his career.
Schneider, who owns the school-record mark of 50.23 seconds in the event, earned his third consecutive Big Sky Championship in Ogden in May. He made his second trip to the NCAA West Preliminary Round prior to the Olympic Trials.
Carley VonHeeder took park in the women's javelin qualifying round on Friday. VonHeeder had two of her three throws travel over 154 feet with her best in the event a toss of 156-02 (47.61m). That mark put her in 16th overall, just four spots shy of a spot in the finals. Her top throw on Friday was the fifth best of her career.
VonHeeder completed her track and field as a Bobcat at the Olympic Trials. VonHeeder made her fourth trip to the NCAA West Preliminary Round after her highlight of her college tenure in May at the Big Sky Championship when she earned a gold medal with a school-record throw of 173-10 (52.99m).
