BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State resumes Big Sky Conference play when the Bobcat men's basketball team hosts Weber State and Idaho State in Worthington Arena on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. The Bobcats' matchup versus the Wildcats is slated to begin at 7 p.m., while MSU's New Year's Day game against the Bengals is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Bobcats close out their four-game homestand with the matchups against the Wildcats and Bengals. MSU is currently on a five-game winning streak which is its longest since a seven-game span of victories a season ago.
MSU closed out its non-conference slate with a 124-73 victory over SAGU American Indian College on Dec. 22. The win improved the 'Cats to 9-4 overall and 8-3 in non-conference play. The non-con record is the best for the program since 1997-98 when that team went 9-2 against non Big-Sky schools.
The Bobcats' victory over the Warriors featured several top 10 single-game marks in program history set. The 124 points were the most ever recorded by a Bobcat team. The 49 field goals and 18 shots made from long range were each second most marks ever tallied. MSU's 33 assists dished out were the fifth most ever by a Bobcat squad while the team's 59.8% shooting was the eighth best in a game since 2001. The win was also the 1,600th recorded by the program which sits 1,600-1,360 all-time.
MSU welcomes Weber State to Bozeman for the first time since the 2019-20 season. A season ago the Bobcats saw their seven-game win streak come to a halt as MSU fell to Weber State on Feb. 4 (96-88) and Feb. 6 (82-74). The Wildcats shot 63.3% in the opening contest between the two sides. The second matchup featured a more competitive game, but Weber State made 28 of 30 free throws to close out a sweep.
Weber State opened the season 8-0 and still is ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Top 25 Poll, but the Wildcats have lost three straight games and four out of their last five. The Wildcats are 2-0 in Big Sky play so far owning early December victories over Northern Arizona and Portland State. Weber State is led by four double- digit scorers in Koby McEwen (15.9), Dillon Jones (12.7), Seikou Sisoho Jawara (11.6) and JJ Overton (11.5).
A variety of players stood out in MSU's latest victory over SAGU AIC as six players scored in double digits. One, Xavier Bishop, recorded the first double-double of his career as he tallied 10 assists to go along with 11 points. His career 1,518 points rank him 54th in Division I men's basketball while his 441 assists rank him 39th.
Two other Bobcats are closing in on high-level achievements. Adamu surpassed 800 points in MSU's recent outing, while Jubrile Belo has 899 points. Belo also ranks among MSU's top 10 all-time in field goal percentage and blocks.
Several key figures are starting to stand out as MSU enters the remainder of its Big Sky portion of its schedule for the 2021-22 season. The Bobcats are 9-2 this year when an opponent shoots under 50%, including a 8-1 mark when the 'Cats outshoot the opposition. MSU is 6-1 this year when outrebounding its opponent. The Bobcats are also 8-0 this season when they keep an opponent to scoring less than 70 points.
Montana State's game against Weber State will be streamed on ESPN+. The game will also be broadcast on the Bobcat Radio Network on KMMS 1450 AM as well as on the Varsity Network app. Links for live streams, live stats and radio coverage are available on the men's basketball schedule page on msubobcats.com.
