Montana State closed out the third quarter on a 17-0 run behind solid defense, perimeter shooting and an inside presence en route to a 76-49 victory over Seattle U on Saturday afternoon in Worthington Arena.
Montana State (7-5) and Seattle U (4-6) exchanged 12 leads in the opening half and a 5-0 run by the Redhawks to close out the second period gave SU a 28-24 lead at intermission.
"We were cold offensively in the first half," said Ellen Kreighbaum Women's Head Basketball Coach Tricia Binford. "We talked at halftime about being intentional in getting post touches and working inside out."
With the score knotted at 34-all following a Darian White layup with 6 minutes, 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter back-to-back three-pointers by White and Katelynn Limardo ignited the Bobcat offense.
At the same time, MSU went to a full court press that disrupted the Redhawks backcourt and the Bobcats went to work down low. Kola Bad Bear gave Montana State an eight-point lead before Gabby Mocchi scored seven consecutive points – five coming from the free throw line. Bad Bear capped the run with a layup as the Bobcats closed out the frame with a 53-36 advantage.
MSU outscored SU 23-13 in the final quarter as White and Limardo scored six points, apiece.
White led four Bobcats in double figures with 21 points, connecting on 8 of 17 from the field. Also in double digits were Leia Beattie 13, Limardo 12, and Bad Bear 11. MSU converted 26 field-goals on 18 assists.
"Good things happen when you share the ball," Binford said. "I thought our defense really gave us a lot of energy in the third quarter and we were able to work inside-out, which is our bread and butter."
After going just 2 of 19 from beyond the arc in the first half, the Bobcats caught fire shooting 48.6% from the field in the final 20-minutes, including 8 of 17 from long distance.
MSU also held a 45-37 edge under the boards as Mocchi matched a career-high with nine rebounds. Bad Bear and Taylor Janssen added seven caroms, apiece.
Defensively, the Bobcats held the Redhawks to 32.1% from the field, including a paltry 4 of 25 from three-point range. White paced MSU with a game-high six steals, while Limardo added four.
SU was led by McKenzi Williams with 11 points.
