Manhattan High product becomes the second Bobcat this year to earn First Team Academic All-America Honors
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State senior Alec Nehring earned First Team Men's Track and Field and Cross Country Academic All-America honors for the 2019-20 season, as selected and announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Mathematics major from Manhattan, Montana, High School was one of 45 student-athletes selected on Thursday. Since 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America recognition on male and female student-athletes in Division I, II, and II of the NCAA as well as NAIA in all championship sports. Nehring is the 17th Bobcat to earn First Team Academic All-America honors and the second this year (joining football player Kyle Finch from Dillon).
A Second Team Academic All-America in 2019, Nehring is a two-time All-Big Sky performer who earned two bronze medals at Big Sky Indoor Championship competition and scored points for the Bobcat men's track and field team six times in championship events. He finished fifth in the Big Sky in the shot put during the 2020 indoor track and field season, before the outdoor season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic, setting a new personal shot put best indoors during the past season, 59-02, a mark which is sixth in school history. His best discus mark, 169 feet, is 10th.
Nehring has been named to the Big Sky All-Academic Team all six semesters eligible. He was one of 40 seniors at Montana State to earn an Award of Excellence during the spring semester. Nehring has maintained a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average at Montana State (out of 4.0), and is the first men's track and field performer to earn repeat Academic All-America accolades in program history.
