Every Friday from now until the beginning of the volleyball season will we spotlight a member of the Bobcat volleyball program. Now up: Susanna Sovde.
Coaches love when student-athletes combine passion with a thirst to get back on the court after overcoming adversity. For Bobcat middle blocker Susanna Sovde her spring season was sailing along and exceeding expectations. The knee that buckled during her freshman season is back to full strength, and despite the off-season getting shut down by COVID-19, Sovde isn't going to let anything get in her way of making a return to the Shroyer Gym floor.
CATCHING UP WITH SUSANNA:
1). Can you give us an update on your current status?
I am currently living with three teammates (Emma, Libby, and Allie) and we are having a great time going to the beach to play sand volleyball and hanging out. I also work as a hostess at Riverside Country Club and really enjoy it. Everything in the world is definitely crazy, but I feel very fortunate to have great family and friends who I can always count on. There is a feeling of unity in Bozeman right now that is pretty special. I attended the BLM rally at Bogart park a couple weeks ago and it was awesome to see so many familiar faces and such a large turnout. I feel lucky to live in such a unique place.
2). How do you think the spring volleyball season was progressing before everything shut down?
Spring season was going really well before it got shut down. As you know I am recovering from an ACL tear and I was making great strides in March with my coaches. We started voluntary open gyms this week and I'm happy to report the knee feels better than ever. Everyone has a fresh commitment to the sport because none of us are taking it for granted anymore. It is also great just to be back in the gym and getting to see each other and the staff on a more regular basis.
3). What are your goals heading into the fall and what are the expectations for the team?
My personal goal for the fall is to have my best season yet. This shouldn't be hard considering I tore my ACL in October of my freshman year. I truly believe that this team can win a conference championship, and come November, I would love to see that title. We worked hard through the quarantine and I'm hoping it pays off.
HEAD COACH DANIEL JONES ON SUSANNA SOVDE:
"When we win a championship, I have no doubt that Suz is going to be one of the big reasons why. She has been relentless in her passion for the team and has taken on a critical leadership role. Suz always turns up to whatever she is doing with a drive and competitive ambition to win, she does in the classroom, on the court and in life. I am a better coach for having her in the program, and this program is better for having her. There were glimpses of what she can do on the court during her freshman campaign. I am beyond excited for her to be back at 100% health and to be able to contribute on the court. She's coming back at a time when we have a lot of depth in the middle blocker position, so it will be fun to see her compete every day and see what she can do."
