Led by ski teams, Bobcats excel in classroom during the fall semester
BOZEMAN, Montana – Bobcat Athletics reinforced a historic fall sports season with excellent performances in the classroom, posting a 3.27 Average Student-Athlete Grade Point Average during the fall semester.
The Bobcat women's tennis team led the way with a 3.859 team GPA, with the alpine (3.734) and Nordic (3.630) ski teams very close. Of Montana State's 339 student-athletes during the fall semester, 39 qualified for the President's List (perfect 4.0 GPA) and 141 finished with a GPA of higher than 3.50. More than two-thirds (68%, 229 of 339) of Bobcat student-athletes finished with a grade point average over 3.0.
"This accomplishment truly exemplifies the meaning of student-athlete and is great to see our academic success mirror our athletic success," said Montana State Director of Athletics Leon Costello. "I am proud of our student-athletes, coaches and academic staff that have worked so hard to achieve this mark and set the standard for Bobcat athletics and academics."
After capping a season that encompassed the entire fall semester by advancing to the NCAA FCS Semifinals for the first time in 35 years, the Bobcat football team finished with a grade point average of 2.981. The women's cross country (3.548 GPA) and women's track and field (3.583 GPA) teams joined the women's tennis and alpine and Nordic ski teams as squads over the 3.50 mark. Women's golf nearly reached that mark, also, with a 3.459 team GPA.
In addition to the football team's FCS Semifinal performance, the Bobcat volleyball squad (3.364 GPA) finished 15-14 and snapped a long losing streak to Sacramento State by winning on the Hornets' home floor in the Big Sky Tournament, the men's cross country team (3.198 GPA) finished third in the Big Sky, and led by conference champion Camila Noe the Bobcat women finished fifth.
