PHOENIX, Ariz. – Montana State closes out its longest road trip of the season when the Bobcats take on Grand Canyon Tuesday at GCU Arena. The Bobcats will be completing its fourth game in the course of five days when they take on the Antelopes. MSU's journey began with a trip to Greensboro, North Carolina, to compete in UNCG's Spartan Invitational from Nov. 15-17.
The Bobcats claimed their first regular season tournament title honors in two seasons by going undefeated over the course of three games in Greensboro. MSU kept all three of its opponents to under 40% shooting from the field, with all recording their season lows, and improved its winning streak to four games.
MSU's 4-1 start to the season is its best five-game stretch to begin a year since the 2010-11 slate. That season, the Bobcats lost their season opener to Hawaii (77-59) but followed that up by winning five straight from Nov. 13-24.
Tennessee Tech shot just 25.9% (15-58) from the field as the Bobcats won their Invitational finale on Nov. 17 over the Golden Eagles, 52-39. It was the first time since 2014 that MSU held an opponent under 30% shooting, while it was also the first time MSU kept an opponent under 40 points in a regular season game in 19 years. The Bobcats picked up the victory Sunday just 16 hours after a thrilling finish.
College basketball took notice of Montana State on Nov. 16 thanks to an unforgettable buzzer beater. UNCG's Isaiah Miller broke a 64-all tie by making a contested layup with 3.5 seconds remaining in the contest. MSU senior guard Harald Frey received the inbounds pass and drilled a shot off glass from past half court to propel the Bobcats past the Spartans, 67-66. The shot earned SportsCenter's No. 1 on its Top 10 Plays of the weekend.
Harald Frey's heroics against UNCG propelled the Bobcats to victory and helped his individual feats. Frey now sits at 1,460 points and moved into ninth in program history in scoring. He also recorded his 100th consecutive start which dates back to his freshman season and is seventh among all DI active players. Frey came into the season fifth in career minutes played among all DI active players with 3,154.
While Montana State faced UNCG and Tennessee Tech for the first time in program history during the Spartan Invite, it did resume a series with Appalachian State on Nov. 15 that hadn't been played since 1997. The foes had split their previous six meetings, but Montana State took advantage of the series by beating the Mountaineers 59-56 in Fleming Gym.
Montana State has been one of the best defensive teams in all of Division I basketball through five games this year. The Bobcats have forced teams to shoot just 34.8% from the field, the 21st best mark in the nation. Opponents' 25.4% clip from beyond the arc is the 37th best mark forced by MSU, while their scoring defense of 60.4 points per game allowed is 65th.
Grand Canyon hosts MSU for the second time in their all-time series. The Lopes won the two teams' first matchup on Nov. 17, 2014 in GCU Arena by a 61-45 score. MSU tied things up early in the contest at 16, but the GCU would respond with a 3-pointer and not relinquish the lead again.
Tuesday's game versus Grand Canyon can be streamed on ESPN3 (WatchESPN.com) online. The game is also available to listen to as part of the Bobcat Sports Radio Network.
