Retired for Don Hass: The famed Iron Tumbleweed, Donny Hass, evokes imagery of football the way it was once played – powerful legs churning out of the I-formation, regularly gaining over 100 yards, a blurry combination of speed and strength, roaring up and down Gatton Field. Hass once told Great Falls Tribune writer Scott Mansch that "what makes productive running backs comes about 80 percent from the shoulders up. So that's knowledge, vision… vision is probably the utmost." Hass, whose nickname came from legendary sportswriter Norm Clarke, played with some of the greatest Bobcats, including Jan Stenerud, Dennis Erickson, and linemen such as Tony Welzenbach. Hass' spectacular 298-yard rushing day against Weber State still stands as a school record, but he once told BBTN it nearly didn't happen. "I told (his roommate) on the drive to the game that day that I didn't feel good and I didn't think I was going to play."
Chronology: Robert O'Brien (1931), Lester Wilson (1934), Jack Binder (1937), Frank Brown (1940), Orin Beller (1941), Clifford Brisbin (1946-48), Gene Downey (1949-50), Jim Posewitz (1953-55), Ron Harcharik (1956-57), Tommy Molen (1958-60), Leon Hartman (1961), Dan Sundling (1962-64), Don Hass (1965-67).
