Montana State's Calvin Root had a solid outdoor season debut and was rewarded as the Bobcat senior was named a Big Sky Conference Men's Co-Field Athlete of the Week
OGDEN, Utah – Montana State's Calvin Root had a solid outdoor season debut and was rewarded as the Bobcat senior was named a Big Sky Conference Men's Co-Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday, April 3.
Root participated in the Al Manuel Northwest Invitational in Missoula from March 30-31. In the opening men's hammer throw Friday, Root completed the event with a first-place showing and a toss of 199-06. That mark was just two inches away from tying his lifetime-best throw. Root's hammer throw put him atop the Big Sky performance list and 57th nationally behind his efforts, with the Big Sky's second-place thrower almost 10 feet behind Root's mark.
The Gilbert, Ariz., native also competed in the discus and shot put on Saturday. Root placed second in the discus (155-06) and fifth in the shot put (46-11.75) among a double-digit field of competitors in each event. Root is 12th in the discus and 17th in the shot put on the Big Sky performance list after the Invitational.
Root's outdoor campaign is off to a strong start and is part of a standout year for the senior. Root received his first Big Sky Athlete of the Week accolade ahead of the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in February, then went on to earn a career-best runner-up finish at the conference meet when he took second in weight throw. He took silver at the 2017 Big Sky Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw and advanced to the 2017 NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas, for the first time as a junior as well.
The Bobcat track and field teams return to competition on Friday and Saturday at the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic in Salt Lake City, Utah.
