Montana State's men's and women's squads rank near the top, with the men polled in fourth and women picked to finish fifth in Big Sky poll.
OGDEN, Utah – The usual suspects sit atop the Big Sky Conference Track and Field Preseason Coaches' Poll that was released on Thursday, March 22. Montana State's men's and women's squads rank near the top, with the men polled in fourth and women picked to finish fifth.
Both outdoor track and field teams from Northern Arizona were selected to win the Big Sky Championship by the league's respective head coaches. NAU's women's team earned all 12 first-place votes and looks to three-peat as Big Sky champions, while the Lumberjack men vie for a 22nd Big Sky outdoor title after receiving 11 of the possible 12 votes.
The MSU men follow up a third-place finish at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in February and head into the outdoor season projected to take fourth. NAU recorded 143 points, but the next three in the poll of Southern Utah (129), Sacramento State (116) and MSU (114) look to contend at the outdoor Big Sky meet.
The Bobcat women's team took fifth at the conference indoor championships and were projected to finish fifth at the outdoor meet by the league's coaches with 98 points. NAU led the way with 144 points and was followed by Sacramento State (129), Weber State (118) and Eastern Washington (103).
Montana State has seen success on both sides in recent years. The men's team has finished in the top five at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in each of the last seven years, with runner-up finishes in 2012 and 2014. The women's squad took runner-up at the Big Sky meet in 2012 and 2015. The Bobcats earned two fifth-place finishes a year ago.
The 2018 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be hosted by Idaho from May 8-11 in Moscow.
