Weber State Spoils Bobcat Homecoming
9/30/2017 5:09:00 PM | Football, General
Weber State scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and hung on to defeat Montana State on Saturday, 25-17, at Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats held a 10-9 lead at halftime, thanks to a 64-yard scoring toss from Chris Murray to Lance McCutheon, but the 18th-ranked Wildcats took over in the second half, methodically pushing the ball down the field.
A six-yard scamper by Kevin Smith made it 15-10, and at the end of the third quarter, quarterback Stefan Cantwell powered in from the 1 to put the game out of reach, 22-10. A homecoming crowd of 19,557 stayed to the end, despite the rain that fell for most of the second half.
The Wildcats controlled the ball throughout the game. While the teams were virtually even in total yards, the visitors kept the ball for 40 minutes to 20 minutes for the Bobcats. Overall, WSU ran 75 plays to MSU's 50.
MSU quarterback Chris Murray continued his dominating ways, rushing for 123 yards on just 14 carries, but the Bobcat were only nine of 23 passing for 149 yards. MSU's fourth quarter touchdown accounted for a chunk of those yards as Kevin Kassis caught a lateral from Murray and then threw a cross-field pass back to the quarterback for a 25-yard score to narrow the gap to 22-17. Trey Tuttle's fourth field goal of the game accounted for the final score.
The Bobcats got on the scoreboard first when Gabe Peppenger booted a 24-yard field goal on their first possession of the game. That's the way the first quarter ended, marking the first time this season WSU trailed after one quarter. Two missed field goals in the second quarter prevented the Bobcats from having a bigger lead. Tuttle's three second quarter field goals gave WSU a 9-3 edge before McCutcheon's second career catch and first career touchdown put the Wildcats in a hole at the half for the first time this season.
Cantwell completed 20 of 30 passes for 206 yards and had another 49 on the ground. Bryson McCabe and Grant Collins sparked the MSU defense with 11 tackles each. There were no turnovers for either team in the game.
With the win, Weber State remains atop the Big Sky Conference with a 2-0 mark (4-1 overall) while MSU slips to 1-1 (1-3 overall). The Bobcats are home again next weekend when Portland State comes to town while WSU has a bye.
