“I’m proud of the way we battled,” said MSU head coach Daniel Jones. “But, the reality is, winning a game is not winning a match. I thought we executed the game plan very well. This was a step forward in building upon the foundation. We’ll learn from this experience and improve.”
Montana State's Natalie Passeck and Chase Doughty notched 13 and 12 kills, respectively, but it wasn't enough to take on Big Ten power Illinois, as the Fighting Illini held on for a 25-17, 22-25, 25-9, 25-21 win over the Bobcats, Friday night in Bobcat Classic action.
After being out-hit .375 to .051 in the opening frame, Montana State (0-2) went toe-to-toe with the Power Five school in the second set, breaking away from a 21-all tie behind a kill by sophomore Savannah Laws and an Illinois (2-0) hitting miscue. The Cats took the second game following a Passeck kill.

The third set belonged to Illinois as the Illini out-hit MSU .333 to -.091. MSU fought back in the final frame and closed to within 24-21 in the waning moments, before UI's Ali Bastianelli ended the match with a kill.
Bobcat setter Sydney Mathison dished out a career-high 35 assists and added seven digs. Sophomore libero Allyssa Rizzo guided MSU defensively with a team-best ten digs.
Illinois was led by Jacqueline Quade with 19 kills, six digs and five blocks.
MSU finishes the Bobcat Classic against Gonzaga on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Shroyer Gym.
