Bobcat Track & Field Earns Individual, Team USTFCCCA Academic Honors

NEW ORLEANS – The Montana State track and field teams, along with multiple Bobcats, were recognized by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their accomplishments in the classroom and in competition during the recently completed academic year.
On Friday, five MSU athletes were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Individuals list following their success during the outdoor season.
The men's team was represented by Alex Lewis. The Moscow, Idaho, native jumped to second all-time in the outdoor long jump in program history with his leap of 24-05.50 this past season. He wrapped up the outdoor campaign by advancing to the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas, after taking ninth and 12th, respectively in the triple jump and long jump at the Big Sky Championships.
Christie Schiel, Jacqueline Verlanic, Casey Teska and Alyssa Snyder earned individual all-academic honors on the women's side.
Schiel, a three-time Big Sky champion and 800-meter indoor and outdoor MSU record holder, advanced to the NCAA West Regionals where she finished 25th overall. She also capped her outdoor season by helping propel the Bobcats to a 4x400 relay school-record time of 3:40.28 for a runner-up finish, along with earning silver in the 800, at the Big Sky Championships.
Verlanic moved up MSU's top 10 charts and capped her final Bobcat season by taking third in the hammer throw at the Big Sky Championships. She had a strong outdoor slate, moving up to fourth on the MSU hammer throw list with her toss of 193-04. The Anaconda, Mont., native also moved into MSU's top 10 list in the indoor weight throw (57-05.50). She placed 33rd at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in the hammer throw.
Teska used her final outdoor season of eligibility in 2017 and advanced to her third West Regional. Teska moved up to second all-time in program history during the season in the pole vault with her mark of 13-05.75. She capped her final Big Sky Championship appearance by taking fourth.
Snyder became the Bobcats' highest finisher at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since Ellie Rudy in 2008. Snyder placed fourth in the 10,000-meter run in Eugene in June, while breaking the previous school record time she held (32:58.31) to earn First Team All-America status. She qualified for the NCAA Championships by earning titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 at the Big Sky Championships and placed eighth in the 10,000 at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
Noah Martin, Samuel Bloom, Mason Storm and Jessica Chrisp were also recognized as USTFCCCA All-Academic Individuals. The four Bobcats earned the designation for their success during the indoor season, ranking in the top 96 in the nation in a respective event.
To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards; for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
The Bobcats' men's and women's squads also were honored, Thursday, as Division I Track and Field All-Academic Teams.
A total of 360 Division I teams were recognized for their academic efforts by the USTFCCCA, with 218 women's teams honored and 142 men's teams recognized.
The MSU men's squad earned a 3.15 cumulative GPA, while the women's squad earned a 3.34 GPA.
