Montana State track and field makes its opening appearance at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas, on Thursday, May 25. Eight of the nine Bobcats are scheduled to compete on the first day of action at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
"The exciting thing is we've doubled the number that we're bringing down from four last year to nine this year," Montana State head coach Dale Kennedy said. "It's exciting to be visible during the first round of the championships, we're really looking forward to that.
"I really want to credit our event coaches Tom Eitel, Mike Carignan and Lyle Weese. They've done such a great job with our kids all year long, and then certainly with these individuals, to the point where they can advance to the national championships."
The Bobcats get started on the University of Texas campus at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday. Seniors Casey Teska and Jacqueline Verlanic participate in the pole vault and hammer throw, respectively. Also competing in field events throughout the day are freshman Carley VonHeeder, junior Calvin Root and sophomore Alex Lewis.
Each field event is contested in a single round with the top 12 placers advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene.
Junior Amanda Jaynes and senior Christie Schiel make their debuts at the prelims Thursday. Jaynes runs in heat 1 of the 400-meter hurdles and Schiel competes in heat 5 of the 800. The top three finishers in each heat and the remaining top six times advance to the quarterfinals Friday of those two events. The top three finishers of the three quarterfinal heats and remaining top three times will advance to Eugene.
MSU sophomore Alyssa Snyder takes part in the 48-competitor 10,000-meter run field Thursday evening. The top 12 finishers in the event advance to the NCAA Championships.
Junior Kyle Douglass begins his second trip to the West Prelims Friday with the shot put, then enters the discus competition Saturday.
Team roster information, heat sheets and start lists are available on the West Preliminary Round Headquarters page. Each day of the prelims will be live streamed on TexasSports.com and live results are available for each event.
