The Montana State ski team had five racers post top 10 finishes, including a runner-up performance from Benedictine Lyche in the women's slalom, Saturday afternoon at the RMISA/NCAA West Regional Championships hosted by the University of Denver.
Lyche clocked a two-run total of 2:02.74, including the second fastest second-run in 1:01.09. Also scoring for the Bobcats were Jocelyn McCarthy, seventh, 2:03.95, and Mia Henry, 12th, 2:04.67.
"Benni is on fire," said MSU alpine coach Kevin Francis. "It's a great time of year to be skiing your best. It was a very successful couple of days for the Bobcats."
The Cat men were led by Morten Bakke, who finished ninth overall in 1:51.35. He was followed by Jeffrey Bell, 11th, 1:51.49, and David Neuhauser, 12th, 1:51.62.
The MSU Nordic contingent took to the course for the first time during the championships with the 5/10K classic races.
Karsten Hokanson had the top finish for the Bobcats placing ninth with a time of 30:05.0. Also scoring for MSU were Noah Andersen, 16th, 31:08.8, and Martin Muan, 29th, 32:30.0.
"I'm really happy with the effort put forth across the entire squad," said MSU Nordic coach Matthew Johnson. "This was our most consistent classic of the season and everyone fought really hard on a really tough course at over 8000-feet.
"It was great to see Karsten skiing back into the top 10 after a tough trip to Alaska plagued by illness," Johnson added.
The Montana State women were paced by All-American Anika Miller, who finished tenth in a time of 17:35.2. She was followed in MSU's top three by Anna Fake, 15th, 17:53.7, and Johanna Taliharm, 16th, 17:53.9.
"Our newcomers on the women's side are inching their way up the results list every single race which is great to see," Johnson commented. "We are excited about the mass start races on Sunday, which are especially helpful for our young team as they know exactly where they are throughout the entire race and are always learning a lot from the older girls who ski at such a high level on the RMISA circuit."
Colorado leads the team standing after six events with 499 points. The Buffs are followed by DU 464.5, Utah 447, MSU 418.5, New Mexico 367.5, Alaska Anchorage 273.5, Alaska Fairbanks 112, and Wyoming 51.
The championships will conclude Sunday with the 10/15K Nordic freestyle.
