Matthew Johnson is in his fifth season as Head Nordic Ski Coach at Montana State University. Johnson has coached the Bobcats to numerous NCAA top ten finishes, including a program high fourth place showing in 2015.
Johnson has coached one NCAA national champion (Anika Miller) and mentored Bobcat student-athletes to nine All-America performances. Johnson was named the 2015 NCAA Nordic Coach of the Year after guiding his student-athletes to numerous accolades, including MSU Athlete of the Year, Bobcat Team of the Year, and multiple NCAA Academic Recognition awards.
Prior to his tenure at MSU, Johnson served as Head Juniors Coach of Alaska Winter Stars in Anchorage Alaska; Program Director and Head Coach of the Utah Nordic Alliance in Salt Lake City, Utah; and assistant coach at Burke Mountain Academy. In addition, he served as wax technician at the 2013 USSA World Junior/U23 Worlds Teams in Liberec, Czech Republic and has supervised teams of wax technicians in multiple regions at Junior National Championships.
A four-year member of the ski team at Middlebury College in Vermont, Johnson served as captain his senior season. During his second season at Middlebury, he competed in the 2006 World Juniors in Slovenia.
As a junior racer, the Anchorage native competed for Team Alaska at the USSA Junior Olympics and captured two gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals for his efforts. Johnson earned USAA All-America kudos from 2001-04.
Johnson received his Bachelor of Arts degree in environmental studies and geography from Middlebury College in 2008.
