Bobcat Nordic Team Completes Utah Invitational

The Bobcat Nordic contingent racked-up 196 points and sits in seventh place behind Colorado 303.5, Denver, 295, Utah 277, New Mexico 259.5, Alaska Fairbanks 252, and Alaska Anchorage 225.
The Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association season opened with two meets running simultaneously over the past two days. While the alpine portion of the Montana State Invitational finishes at Big Sky on Monday with slalom, the University of Utah Invitational saw its midway mark following the Nordic disciplines over the weekend at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah.
The Bobcat Nordic contingent racked-up 196 points and sits in seventh place behind Colorado 303.5, Denver, 295, Utah 277, New Mexico 259.5, Alaska Fairbanks 252, and Alaska Anchorage 225.
MSU sophomore Karsten Hokanson, a product of Salt Lake City, posted the best performance for the Cats with a pair of top 10 efforts. Hokanson was seventh overall in the men's 15K freestyle race, covering the course in 37:57.1. He was followed in MSU's top three by Noah Andersen, 22nd, 40:19.9, and Martin Muan, 36th, 42:54.6.
In the women's 10K freestyle, the Bobcats were led by All-American Anika Miller, who finished 15th in a clocking of 30:21.1. She was followed by Kathleen O'Connell, 18th, 30:32.8, and 2016 NCAA qualifier Johanna Taliharm, 26th, 30:58. 7.
Other Bobcat contributors were Emma Tarbath, 26th, 31:12.6, and Anna Fake, 34th, 32:19.8.
On Sunday, the classic sprints took center stage. It marked the first time in almost 30 years that the event has been part of the RMISA circuit.
Muan paced the Bobcat men's team placing ninth overall in a time of 3:50.2. He was followed closely by Hokanson, tenth, 3:51.4, and Andersen, 14th, 3:56.0.
The MSU women were once again led by Miller, who placed ninth overall in 3:44.3. She was followed by Taliharm, 21st, 3:56.1, and Jordi Floyd, 27th, 3:59.3.
Also contributing in the sprint were Tarbath, 36th, 4:05.8, Fake, 37th, 4:05.9, and O'Connell, 39th, 4:10.1.
The Bobcat Nordic squad will turn its attention to the MSU Invitational slated for Jan. 14-15 at Bohart Ranch.
