Bobcat Skiers Open 2017 Campaign at Montana State and Utah Invitationals

The Montana State alpine and Nordic ski teams will open their 2017 schedule heading in different directions this weekend.
The Montana State alpine and Nordic ski teams will open their 2017 schedule heading in different directions this weekend.
The alpine squad will host the first portion of the MSU Invitational Jan. 8-9 at Big Sky Ski Resort on Tippy's Tumble. Giant slalom races will be held on Sunday, with slalom slated for Monday. An NCAA giant slalom qualifier will precede the event on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Nordic disciplines of the MSU Invite will take place Jan. 14-15 at Bohart Ranch.
The Montana State Nordic contingent will open its season at the Utah Invitational, Jan, 7-8 at Soldier Hollow in Midway, UT. The 5/10 K freestyle races will be held on Saturday, with the classical (sprints) events on Sunday.
"We're excited to get going," said MSU alpine coach Kevin Francis. "This is what we work all year for. We're excited to be racing at Big Sky and the chance to feel at home. We have good energy right now.
"Things went well in dry land training," Francis continued. "We have a few lingering injuries, but we're going to go out hard. We tell our kids to do your best and be satisfied with that. We want them to see improvement every day. We want them to get after it and throw it all out there. These are the first few steps in this season's journey."
Six 2016 NCAA competitors return in alpine, all who earned All-America honors last season. For the men, David Neuhauser is a three-time All-American while Morten Bakke is a two-time All-American. Garett Driller earned All-America honors last season in the slalom. On the women's side, Benedicte Lyche is a two-time giant slalom All-American while Stephanie Gartner and Jocelyn McCarthy were also All-Americans in 2016.
In Nordic, Anika Miller was the 2016 NCAA champion in the women's 5-km freestyle. Johanna Taliharm also competed at the NCAA Championships last year in women's Nordic. For the men, Karsten Hokanson competed at last year's NCAA Championships while Erik Axelsson was a competitor for the Bobcats at NCAA's in 2015.
