Bobcat Nordic Team Posts Three Top 10 Finishes at MSU Invite

“Karsten had a stellar day,” said MSU Nordic head coach Matthew Johnson. “He was left wanting more after his races in Utah last week and he definitely got it today.”
The Montana State Nordic ski team opened the MSU Invitational with three top 10 finishes in freestyle, Saturday morning at Bohart Ranch.
MSU's highest finish of the day went to sophomore Karsten Hokanson, who completed the 10-kilometer men's race in 27:41.2 to finish fourth overall and record 31 points for the Bobcats. He was followed by Noah Andersen, 29th, 30:30.3, and Martin Muan, 32nd, 30:37.0.
"Karsten had a stellar day," said MSU Nordic head coach Matthew Johnson. "He was left wanting more after his races in Utah last week and he definitely got it today."
Utah's Kevin Bolger won the men's individual title in 26:52.0.
Two Bobcat women placed in the top 10 of the 5K freestyle. Freshman Kathleen O'Connell finished seventh overall with a time of 16:26.7, while Johanna Taliharm was also among the best racers placing tenth in 16:39.9. Rounding out MSU's scorers was Emma Tarbath, 28th, 17:29.8.
"Kathleen skied a great race right out of the start," Johnson said. "It was clear that she was firing on all cylinders today and seventh place is an incredible result for a freshman American on the RMISA circuit."
Colorado's Petra Hyncicova took the women's freestyle crown in 15:01.4.
With just the Nordic classic races remaining, Colorado sits atop the team standings with 504 points. They are followed by Denver 452, Utah 448.5, Montana State 374.5, New Mexico 334, Alaska Anchorage 249, Westminster 246, Alaska Fairbanks 108, Wyoming 56, and Colorado Mountain College 33.
"We had perfect tracks and a cold sunny day at Bohart for the freestyle races," Johnson said. "We are building our way into this season as a team and the long training season is starting to pay off for the athletes."
The MSU Invitational concludes with the mass start classic races beginning with the women at 9:30 a.m. at Bohart Ranch, just north of Bridger Bowl.
Other MSU Finishers: Freestyle Women – Jordi Floyd, 38th, 18:13.9; Anna Fake, 39th, 18:17.7; Maria Gesior, 45th, 20:31.8; Lydia Strohl, 46th, 21:56.5.
