Tanner Gambill finishes 23rd in javelin to pace MSU
Tanner Gambill threw the javelin 209-9 to finish 23rd at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Regional in Lawrence, Kansas, on Friday.
Battling weather delays as much as the elite competition, the first three Bobcats to compete performed well. Gambill's mark, and that of senior Kaylee Schmitz who ran the 800 meters in 2:10.05, both nearly equaled their season's best marks. Schmitz finished 29th, and both out-performed their seeds.
"The kids performed extremely well," said Bobcat coach Dale Kennedy."Every athlete here had to deal with adversity with the weather and schedule changes, but I thought our kids handled it all well."
The careers of Schmitz, Gambill and Zach Sharp each ended Friday, as the three failed to advance to the NCAA Championships.Sharp finished 40th with a toss of 188-9.
"Kaylee had a great career," Kennedy said. "She won a Big Sky Championship and holds school (800 meter) records indoors and outdoors. Tanner really competed well. He's shown great resolve during his career. Zach Sharp is a great young man, a real difference-maker. He's a great model for his teammates. I'm very proud of all these kids."
MSU's fourth regional qualifier, Kyle Douglass, competes in the discus on Saturday morning.
