The Montana State ski team will take to the slopes on Wednesday, March 9 as the 63rd Annual NCAA Skiing Championships open with the giant slalom event beginning with the men's first run at 9 a.m., followed by the women at 9:45 a.m.
The NCAA Skiing Championships will continue with the Nordic freestyle on Thursday, slalom on Friday and will conclude with the Nordic classic races on Saturday morning. The NCAA meet is hosted by defending national champion Colorado.
"The snow is going to be perfect for racing," said MSU head coach Kevin Francis. "It will be hard and fair for everyone. It looks like we are going to have a beautiful day for racing. The Bobcats trained giant slalom on the venue over the last couple of days and are looking strong going into Wednesday."
Junior David Neuhauser, who was a Second-Team All-America performer at last year's NCAAs will guide the MSU men. The Brandenburg, Austria native posted a season-best third place finish in slalom at the Montana State Invitational in January. Also qualifying for the Bobcats were Garret Driller and freshman Morten Bakke, who posted three top 10 finishes this winter.
The MSU women's alpine squad will feature Benedicte Lyche, who won the individual RMISA/NCAA West Regional giant slalom title last week. Lyche garnered Second-Team All-America accolades last winter. Newcomers Jocelyn McCarthy and Stephanie Gartner complete MSU women's alpine contingent.
Senior Cambria McDermott, who earned First-Team All-America kudos last season returns as front runners for the same honors this week. The Putney, Vermont product posted five top 5 finishes this season. Also qualifying for the Bobcat Nordic women's team are Anika Miller and Johanna Taliharm.
The Bobcat men's Nordic team will also be anchored by a senior. Sawyer Kesselheim, a Bozeman High grad, has established himself as one of the most consistent skiers in MSU history. Kesselheim posted an impressive eight top 10 showings this winter. Also racing for MSU's Nordic team are Forrest Mahlen and Karsten Hokanson.
As a team, MSU will look to better its seventh place finish from last winter when it racked-up 259 points. That showing matched the 2012 squad for the best co-ed finish in school history.
The Bobcats will also look for its first individual champion since former MSU standout and Director of Skiing Dan Brelsford captured the slalom crown in 1978.
