Four Bobcats Earn All-America Honors; MSU Slips into Second at NCAAs

Montana State junior David Neuhauser paced the men’s alpine team finishing sixth in slalom at the 63rd Annual NCAA Skiing Championships, Friday night under the lights at Mount Werner.
Montana State junior David Neuhauser paced the men's alpine team finishing sixth in slalom at the 63rd Annual NCAA Skiing Championships, Friday night under the lights at Mount Werner.
Neuhauser's two run time of 1:25.48, was just .11 faster than teammates Garret Driller and Morten Bakke, who tied for seventh in 1:25.59. The trio all earned Second-Team All-America honors for their efforts and racked-up 75 points.
"The guys did it," said MSU alpine coach Kevin Francis. "They had their best race on the best day to do it. It was incredible to see."
Denver's Erik Read won the men's slalom title in 1:24.66.
On the women's side, MSU freshman Jocelyn McCarthy placed tenth in a two-run clocking of 1:31.66 to garner Second-Team All-America kudos. Rounding out MSU slalom performances were Stephanie Gartner, 19th, 1:33.01, and Benedicte Lyche, 33rd, 2:22.25.
"Jocelyn had a very solid performance, as well," Francis said. "Benny crashed very hard. She's doing alright. She was skiing amazing and was really going for the win, but sometimes that happens in slalom."
Utah's Julie Mohagen captured the women's slalom crown in 1:29.63.
Despite MSU's alpine contingent recording 108 points in the event, Denver wrestled the lead away from Montana State, which had led after each of the first four events. The Pioneers moved from third into first and go into Saturday's final two races with 405.5 points to 390 by the Bobcats. Utah slipped back into third place with 362 points, with the Buffaloes fourth with 340.5. The four continued to pull away from the rest of the 23-team field, as Dartmouth is a distant fifth with 257 points.
"The Bobcats rose to the occasion," Francis stated. "This was a great performance by our NCAA team. Our whole team worked so hard this year and they are all a part of it."
Montana State and DU sit atop the number of All-America honors with 11, apiece.
The NCAA Skiing Championships will finish with the Nordic classic race at Howelsen Hills on Saturday morning.
