The Montana State Track and Field women's 4x400 relay topped off a great weekend in California for the 'Cats by breaking the school record. Carley McCutchen, Iris Hardarson, Paige Squire and Chantel Jaeger completed the race in 3:40.65, breaking the record that was set last season by .62 seconds. The new record is best in the Big Sky Conference.
"This is always a great meet to compete in," Head Coach Dale Kennedy said. "The competition is the best in the country and we always come out with some great results. There were some great individual performances that highlighted the weekend for us, but overall I'm very pleased with how we competed from start to finish over the last three days."
Jake Turner and Heather Demorest led the Bobcat distance crew, both qualifying for the conference championships in more than one event. Turner found qualifying marks in the 3000 steeplechase after finishing fifth with a time of 9:06.52 and in the 5000 (14:16.98). Demorest placed fifth in the steeple chase (10:22.54) and fourth in the 1500 (4:25.18).
Cristian Soratos ran a 3:41.17 1500 race, finishing in second. He also found a seventh place finish in the 800 (1:49.87). Michael Asay ran a season-best in the 5000, running a time of 14:31.94 and finished third in the 1500 on Saturday (3:52.18).
Running a time of 23.99, Chantel Jaeger tied the school's 200m record. Jaeger also ran a 54.99 400 to place third in her heat. Iris Hardarson placed 28th overall in the 400, running a time of 55.59, fast enough to qualify for the BSC Championships.
Paige Squire topped her personal-best in the 100m hurdles with a third place finish and a time of 14.08. Squire also competed in the 400m hurdles, posting a time of 1:00.43, a qualifying standard.
MSU's pole vaulters finished in the top both days of competition. Casey Teska cleared a height of 12-03.50 to place sixth and finished fifth with a height of 12-00.50. Ryan Kropp made two clearances over 16-00 feet to finish fourth both days.
Alexander Lewis jumped 22-11.75 feet both days to finish second in his fight on the second day.
Taylor Pfister found her way in to the top three, throwing the javelin 139-04. Kristi VandeBergh threw the discus 146-10 to place fourteenth.
The Bobcats will travel to Missoula next weekend to compete in the Cat/Griz Dual on Saturday, April 25.
