Track and Field Hands Out Season Awards

Montana State Track and Field announced its annual awards for the 2015 indoor season.
TOP GUN AWARD: Given to the male and female who recorded the most number of points during the indoor season.
CRISTIAN SORATOS (Sr./Salinas, CA) – The distance runner scored 88 total points for the 'Cats, while leading the nation in the mile for the entire season. Soratos ran a mile time of 3:55.27 at the Washington Husky Invitational in Seattle, Washington, which was the fastest mile run by any athlete in the 2015 season. Mitch Horning was not far behind Cristian, scoring 85 points.
CARLEY MCCUTCHEN (Sr./Buckley, WA) – McCutchen earned a total of 100.5 points this season, in route to breaking the conference (and MSU) indoor pentathlon, scoring 4,034 points. The senior was also crowned the Big Sky Conference Champion in the event, tying the meet record with 3,969 points. McCutchen was named Most Outstand Female athlete at the meet, while earning All-Conference honors. Paige Squire battle Carley the award with 98 points.
OUTSTANDING TRACK PERFORMER:
CRISTIAN SORATOS (Sr./Salinas, CA) – Soratos earned three first place finishes at the Big Sky Conference Championships in the 800, the mile and the distance medley relay. He earned Most Outstanding Male honors at the championships, in addition to Big Sky All-Conference honors in all three events. He was also a part of the distance medley relay that broke the school record with a time of 9:55.77.
HEATHER DEMOREST (Sr./Darby, MT) – The senior consistently led MSU's distance crew throughout the season, which was highlighted by two gold medals at the BSC Championships in the 3000 and 5000. Demorest earned Most Valuable Female at the meet, scoring more points than any other female competitor (20). She also earned All-Conference honors in both events.
CHANTEL JAEGER (Sr./Yakima, WA) – Jaeger headed the Bobcat sprinters this season, breaking the school's 200m record with a time of 23.90. The senior placed second in the 400 at the conference meet and sixth in the 200, earning All-Conference honors in the 400. Chantel was also a part of the distance medley relay team who placed second at the championships.
OUTSTANDING FIELD PERFORMER:
SEAN FERRITER (Sr./Butte, MT) – Ferriter placed first in the weight throw in all six regular season meets, before placing second at the conference championships. The senior's best throw came at the Powder River Triangular in Gillette, Wyo., where he threw a distance of 65.29 feet.
CARLEY MCCUTCHEN (Sr./Buckley, WA) – McCutchen competed in the high jump and long jump throughout the season for MSU. The senior jumped a distance of 18' 7 2/3" to move up to number six on MSU all-time top ten list. With a high jump of 5' 7 1/4", Carley sits at number seven. She also broke the school record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.59 seconds.
OUTSTANDING FRESHMAN:
MITCHEL HORNING (Fr./Eugene, OR) – Horning qualified for the conference championships in the 60 and 200, as he was the fastest Bobcat in the 200 for the season. The freshman earned All-Conference honors in the 60, placing third (6.90). He also placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 21.91.
CAROLINE HARDIN (Fr./Bozeman, MT) – Hardin qualified for the BSC championships in the 3000, finishing in 13th with a time of 10:33.36. Her best time in the event this season came at the Bobcat Open, where she ran a converted 9:57.94. The freshman ranked 13th in the mile in the conference (5:00.77), 11th in the 3000 (10:18.13) and 12th in the 5000.
MOST IMPROVED:
CRISTIAN SORATOS (Sr./Salinas, CA) – Last spring in the outdoor season, Soratos just missed the mark to advance to the NCAA Championships in the 1500 at regionals. Soratos came back on fire, winning three conference titles and a trip to Nationals, where he placed second in the mile. The senior dropped his 4:01.60 mile time to 3:55.27.
CARLEY MCCUTCHEN (Sr./Buckley, WA) – McCutchen redshirted last spring, before advanced to the NCAA's in the outdoor season, placing 18th in the final day of competition. The senior returned this spring, breaking two MSU records, two conference records and just missing the mark to advance to nationals. McCutchen will return this spring with momentum into her final season with the 'Cats.
