McCutchen Ties Record, Wins Individual Pentathlon Conference Title

Carley McCutchen picked up right where she left off from last week, winning the Big Sky Conference pentathlon by 218 points at the conference championships today. McCutchen's total score of 3,969 ties the conference meet record that was set last season. The senior won four-of-five events, while finishing fourth in the shot put. The shot put was won by Danielle Muri, who threw a distance of 40-07 feet.
"All four of these athletes set the tone for the weekend," assistant coach Erin Jones-Graf said. "They had steady performances, but overall did a great job. They did what they needed to do get the team on the right track for the rest of the meet."
McCutchen set the tone for MSU in the first event, winning the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.67, worth 980 points. Jessica Chrisp finished seventh, running a time of 9.03, followed by Muri who placed eighth (9.06).
The 'Cats finished first, seventh and eleventh on the high jump, led by McCutchen's jump of 5-07.75, a personal-best. Chrisp earned a mark of 5-04.25 and Muri a height of 5-01.75.
Muri won the shot put by a land slide, throwing 40-07 feet, with her closest competitor throwing 35-00.25. McCutchen placed fourth, throwing 34-02.75 and Chrisp finished 16th with a distance of 28-00.
McCutchen cruised to her first place finish, jumping 18-07 in the long jump and running a 2:21.36 800. Muri placed eighth in the long jump with a distance of 17-05.5 and 11th in the 800 (2:31.68). Chrisp found her highest finish in the long jump with a jump of 17-08.75 and finished eighth in the 800 (2:28.48).
McCutchen's first place finish with a total of 3,969 points gives MSU 10 team points. Muris placed fourth overall (3,604), bringing in five points and Chrisp's eighth place finish with 3,492 points adds one more point to the team total.
Mason Storm competed in day one of the heptathlon, sitting in third place after four events. Storm earned lifetime bests in three-of-four events. The sophomore placed sixth in the 60m dash, running a time of 7.20 seconds. Storm won the long jump with a personal best of 22-11.25 feet and tied for fifth in the high jump (6-00.75), also a PR. He placed fifth in the shot put, throwing 38-08.75 feet, putting Storm with a total of 2,888 points, just seven points off the lead. The heptathlon will continue tomorrow morning, followed by the rest of the competition.
