Montana State's cross country teams will be competing at the Big Sky Conference Cross Country Championships in Cedar City, Utah on Saturday morning. The 5,000-meter and 8,000-meter race will be hosted at the Cedar Ridge Golf Course by Southern Utah Unviersity. This is the first time the Thunderbirds have hosted a Big Sky Conference Championship in any sport.
"We have two very different teams," head coach Lyle Weese said. "The women's side has a lot of upperclassmen with experience, whereas the men's team is being driven by the underclassmen and new faces on the team. Both have their strengths and can be successful on any given day."
Junior-transfer Diego Leon led the Bobcat at the Pre-National meet in Louisville, KY, placing in the top 50 among the fastest runners in the country. Leon, the2015 CCCAA Male Athlete of the Year, recorded his best time of 24:59.3 at the Division I level and will look to anchor MSU on Saturday. Underclassmen Justice Lamer and Matthew Gotta have continuously paced the team throughout the season as Lamer placed second in his first collegiate meet. Jake Turner will likely race, but is still recovering from a recent injury.
Freshman Alyssa Snyder has made an immediate impact on the team, leading the team in all three meets this season. The Coalville, UT native found her best finish at the UM Invite in Missoula, where she ran the 5K in 17:59.22, placing second. Classmate Chiana Warner will look to push the Bobcats pace, along with Louisa Serpe, Jenette Northey and Kaylee Schmitz.
"The race comes down to the one-to-five split. When we've been successful this season, our splits have been the smallest. We need to race as a team to keep our splits low in order to be successful this weekend. I'm not going to rule out any of our athletes to win the individual title, but we're focused on finishing strong as a team."
The women's race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8,000-meter at 11 a.m.
