Montana State Track and Field opened up the 2015 season with its 10th Annual MSU Combined Events Invitational, competing with cross-state rival, Montana. The Bobcats showed promising results for a successful 2015 season, including two qualifying for the 2015 Big Sky Conference Championships.
Carley McCutchen (Sr./Buckley, WA) with 3,739 points, and Danielle Muri (Jr./Billings, MT) with 3,666, finished first and second, both qualifying for the conference championships. McCutchen, who finished first in three-of-five individual events, moved up MSU's all-time top 10 list to spot number three, while Muri made her way to number five. The senior also qualified for the conference championships in the 60m hurdles and the high jump. Muri earned personal-bests in four-of-five events, finishing first in the shot put.
Jessica Chrisp (So./Deer Park, WA) finished in sixth, just missing the conference standard of 3,300 points with 3,213. Samantha Mohl (So./Billings, MT) (2,809) and Megan Ralstin (Fr./Lewiston, ID) (2,319) also competed for MSU. Montana's Nicole Stroot, Erika McLeod and Shayle Dezellem took places third, fourth and fifth.
"Carley and Danielle both qualifying for the championships really set the tone for the season," assistant coach Tom Eidel said. "Both are on track to be in the top three by the conference meet. The underclassman are still learning the aspects of a multi, but it's good for us to see where they are at."
On the men's side, Mason Storm (So./Great Falls, MT) earned a second place finish, behind Montana's Charlie Bush. Storm earned a personal-best time of 2:57.02 in the 1000m. Storm finished with 4,485 points, while Bush earned 4,533 points.
"Mason is a different athlete than he was last season. He is very fit and with some work on certain events, he will be in a good spot later in the season."
Montana State officially opens the season Friday, January 16 in the Montana State University Open. This meet is slated to begin at 4 p.m. with field events, and 4:30 p.m. with track events in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
