COMPLETE RESULTS
Montana State's Track and Field team opened up the 2015 indoor season on Friday evening with the Montana State Open, hosting six other schools. Although no team scores were counted, several MSU student-athletes stood out among the field of over 200 participants.
Cristian Soratos was just seconds shy of the school record in the mile, running a 3:56.87 in the event. Soratos earned a Big Sky qualifying time in addition to being ranked on top of mile-runners in the NCAA.
Michael Tobin and Mitchell Horning led the MSU sprint team, finishing one-two in the 60 with 7.01 and 7.04 times. Rory Bauer came out on top in the 400 (49.04), with teammate Eric Zechenelly trailing his heels (49.32).
Highlighting the field events for the men, Sean Ferriter finished first with a 61.02-75 foot weight throw, while Kevin Close earned a 46.05.15 mark in the triple jump, both Big Sky Conference qualifying marks.
On the women's side, Heather Demorest earned the top spot, running a 4:55.68 mile. Keely West and Louisa Serpe earned a first and second place finish in the 3000, finishing with times of 10:25.03 and 10:42.58.
MSU's women's sprint team continues to impress, as they finished first, second and third in the 60m hurdles. Carley McCutchen earned another qualifying time in the event, posting a time of 8.71. Paige Squire just missed the mark, running a 7.78.
Kristi VandeBergh led the field events for the women, with a 44-09.50 distance in the weight throw. Carter Theade and Sami Risa finished the pole vault at a height of 11-07.75.
"It was a fun night to watch some of these athletes compete this well," head coach Dale Kennedy said. "Sean Ferriter kicked off our night in the weight throw qualifying for the conference championships. Cristian Soratos had an unreal performance, just missing the school record, but putting himself at number one in the nation. This was a great start to set the tone for the rest of the season."
The Bobcats remain at home, as they host Montana and Idaho State next Friday, January 23 in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
