Speedy heat brings season to an end for Soratos

The NCAA West Regional Preliminary came to a close, following the lone MSU Track and Field performance on Saturday. Cristian Soratos was the only Bobcat to compete in Fayetteville, Arkansas at John McDonnell Field, running in the quarterfinal of the 1,500.
Looking for his first bid to the NCAA Championships, his junior year campaign fell short in the 1,500, after earning an at-large qualifier with his lifetime best time of 3:43.73 in Thursday's first round race. The first heat of the 1,500 produced a winning time of 3:44.67 but Soratos' heat had a different plan. On the heels of the pace of Arizona's Lawi Lalang, who won the second heat with an impressive 3:40.35, it presented a much different scenario for qualifying for the Big Dance. The Salinas, California native hung with the pack for the first two laps but fell back toward the latter end of the race. He was able to kick in at the end to finish ninth in his heat of 12, but his time of 3:45.34 was not enough for Soratos to continue his season a few more weeks.
Soratos closes out another strong season for his middle distance efforts which included a Big Sky Conference title in the 1,500 two weeks back.
"Cristian had a heck of a race," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "Sometimes you have no idea what the pace of your heat will be like and this one was so different from the first one. Of course it would be better to see a few more of us make it out of this meet for Nationals but we still accomplished a lot this week and our underclassmen got more valuable experience at this level."
Overall, of MSU's ten participants in the NCAA Regionals, only Grant Grosvenor was able to advance out, earning his second consecutive bid in the 800 to the NCAA Championships, June 11-14, in Eugene, Oregon. Grosvenor will join Jeff Mohl and Carley McCutchen who already punched their tickets in the multis.
