Montana State Track and Field kicked off their Utah weekend with a bang at the Spring Classic, hosted by Utah in Salt Lake City on Friday, April 11. Competing alongside meet host, as well as Idaho State, Utah State, Utah Valley, Weber State, Westminster and Wyoming, the Bobcats had a successful night including impressive season and lifetime bests and even a program record.
Chantel Jaeger, continuing her junior-year dominance did no differently at the McCarthy Family Track and Field Center. She placed second in the 100 with a lifetime best time of 11.94, bumping her up to the third spot in Bobcat program history. She added yet another victory in her 200 repertoire with a win in 24.36.
Head coach Dale Kennedy puts considerable focus on the team aspect of track and field no matter what meet is taking place and the women's 4x100 relay reflected those values with a new program record time of 46.35. The previous record of 46.46 stood since 1995. Carley McCutchen led off the relay, followed by Irish Hardarson and Paige Squire. Jaeger anchored and helped her team to the new top time.
The women's sprinters could arguably be named the stars of the night. McCutchen and Chelsea Bourque and Squire all notched lifetime bests in the 100 hurdles. McCutchen crossed the line in 14.39, while Squire timed out with 14.56. Bourque's time of 14.72 set a new PR for the senior.
The 400 hurdles were also lucrative for the Bobcats when Squire got another PR time with 1:00.85, almost breaking the one-minute barrier. Freshman Lillian Ball picked up a PR, as well as a Big Sky qualifier in the event with a time of 1:02.85.
The pole vault also featured some great performances from MSU following Casey Teska's three-way tie for the win with a height of 12-06.25 (3.82m). Newcomer Amy Rovira came in fourth with a lifetime best and Big Sky qualifying height of 12-00.50 (3.67m).
Madison Wills picked up a lifetime best in the hammer throw of 159-03 (48.53m), just shy of the Big Sky qualifying distance.
Chris Wilson won the 100 to extend his win streak to its third straight week. He won the race in 10.67. Unfortunately, his streak came to a halt in the 200, placing second in 21.56. Wilson also ran on the third place 4x100 relay, along with Rory Bauer, Nick Melon and Michael Tobin, which notched a season best time of 41.15.
Cristian Soratos and Matthew Tex both picked up season best runs in the 800. Soratos clocked a 1:50.95, while Tex finished in 1:51.00.
Jake Mushaben, in the middle of a serious breakout season, won the long jump, also with a lifetime best. He measured a leap of 23-08.75 (7.23m), over two feet ahead of second place.
"We obviously had a great night," said Kennedy. "This was a great start to the weekend, and we're really excited about what we have the potential to do in Ogden at the Weber State meet."
MSU will conclude the weekend on Saturday, April 12 at the Weber State Invitational.
