MSU battles Montana, the league's top defense, Saturday
Tim Cramsey likes to call Montana State receiver Mitch Griebel "the Wes Welker of the Big Sky," but listen to Bobcat head coach Rob Ash and you might walk away with the impression that the junior is something more akin to a trusty utility tool that he's found use for in nearly every situation.
"Mitch helps the team in so many different ways," Ash said. "He runs good routes, he blocks, he is our holder on extra points and field goals, he isin some of our jet sweep packages. He's very versatile."
It speaks well to Griebel's versatility that his array of skills overshadows how good a pass-catcher he is. A quarterback who converted to receiver early in his time at MSU, Griebel leads the Cats with 36 catches and 353 yards. His toughness is noted inside the Bobcat program.
"He's a really tough kid," Cramsey says. "He catches everything and fights for yards after the catch."
That toughness also shines in his blocking. Griebel threw a key block that spring Chad Newell on a 16-yard touchdown run late in Montana State's 44-39 win over Idaho State last week.
"Mitch is a tough-nosed, savvy football player," said MSU offensive line coach Jason McEndoo. "He knows how to take the proper angle to execute his blocks on the perimeter."
