“I started this summer,” Turner said. “Developing the mentality and setting the goals. All along the process I’ve been telling myself that I belong in the top 40. I have dreams I want to fulfill.”
Montana State junior Jake Turner has been working hard since early summer to reach the goals he put on his calendar a few months ago.
A top ten finish at the Big Sky Conference championships. Check. Garner All-Mountain Region honors. Check. Qualify for the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championship. Check.
Turner, a native of Lolo and graduate of Missoula Sentinel High School, hopes to mark off the final goal on Saturday, Nov. 22 when he competes at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country meet. His sights are set on a top 40 finish and All-America kudos.
"I started this summer," Turner said. "Developing the mentality and setting the goals. All along the process I've been telling myself that I belong in the top 40. I have dreams I want to fulfill."
The men's 10,000 meter race will begin at 11 a.m. (MST) at Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Indiana. Hosting the race is Indiana State University.
Tuner finished seventh at the Big Sky meet and was 15th at the NCAA Mountain Region race. His effort at regionals earned him one of four at-large bids to the national meet.
"I definitely have some nerves," Turner said. "When coach told me at regionals that I qualified for the NCAAs, I immediately got nervous, but also very excited. In the workouts this week, I can't keep it off my mind."
Bobcat distance coach Lyle Weese has been in Turner's shoes, competing at the highest level of collegiate running and recognizing All-America accolades.
"The only advice I can give him is that everyone is in the same boat," Weese said. "Yes, they can have a prestigious name on their uniform, but underneath everyone is going through the same things, same nerves."
Weese was the last Montana State men's runner to race at a NCAA Cross Country Championship, placing 19th overall in 2002.
