Bobcat Harriers Sweep Griz in Brawl of the Wild Dual

“We’re excited to get the sweep over Montana,” MSU Cross Country Coach Lyle Weese said. “We had a lot of kids give us some great performances, but we certainly have areas for improvement.”
For the third consecutive year the Montana State cross country teams swept the annual Brawl of the Wild dual as the Bobcat men handed Montana a 20-36 setback, while the MSU women cruised to a 21-50 victory, Saturday morning at the UM Invitational in Missoula.
"We're excited to get the sweep over Montana," MSU Cross Country Coach Lyle Weese said. "We had a lot of kids give us some great performances, but we certainly have areas for improvement."
Junior Jake Turner, a product of nearby by Lolo and Sentinel High School graduate, won the 8-kilometer men's race with a clocking of 24:42.97. He was followed closely in second by teammate Mike Asay, who posted a mark of 24:52.07.
Rounding out MSU's top five were Zach Kughn, fifth, 25:23.7, Matt Gotta, 14th, and Ethan Wilhelm, 31st, 26:56.09.
In the overall scoring, Eastern Washington nipped the Bobcats with 51 points, followed by MSU 53, Gonzaga 71, Carroll 96, College of Idaho 119, and Montana 123.
"It was a bit of a surprise that Eastern Washington finished in front of us," Weese said. "However, we'll get another shot at them at the Big Sky meet in four weeks. I was also pleased that Jake did so well winning the men's race in his hometown."
For the second consecutive meet, Bobcat freshman Caroline Hardin paced the Bobcat women. The Bozeman product finished fourth in the women's 5-kilometer event, covering the course in 17:44.97.
Also placing in the top 10 for MSU were Keely West, sixth, 17:50.88, Rachel Sullivan, eighth, 17:53.67, and Jenette Northey, tenth, 18:00.41.
Rounding out Montana State's top five was Michelle Cline, who finished 18th in 18:26.70.
"I thought we had a huge improvement from the MSU Invitational," Weese said. "Also, getting ahead of Eastern Washington, who was picked in front of us in the preseason coaches' poll, was pretty exciting."
In the overall scoring, the Bobcats finished first with 46 points, followed by Eastern Washington 57, Gonzaga 64, Montana 90, Carroll College 131, Santa Clara 155 and the College of Idaho 156.
"Caroline had another strong race and is showing a lot of confidence for a freshman," Weese said. "Keely West, Rachel Sullivan and Michelle Cline also posted big improvements, which was a big part of our success in the race."
MSU will race next at the Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Indiana on Oct. 18.
