Montana State Harries Compete at Pre-Nationals in Indiana

“A race like this will not give you any false pretenses,” MSU Assistant/Distance Coach Lyle Weese. “We’ll get a good look at where we stack-up going head-to-head with the best, which means you can’t make many mistakes, you can’t get out too slow and you can’t get out too fast. There is so much traffic and everyone is right on top of each other and tightly packed.”
The Montana State men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the Pre-National Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 18 on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. The event is hosted by Indiana State University and will begin with the women's 6K Blue race at 9 a.m. (MST), followed by the men's 8K Blue contest at 9:35 a.m.
Over 1,600 student-athletes and 158 teams will compete in six races. Both Bobcat squads will compete in the Blue division. The women's Blue race features No. 1 Michigan, No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 Georgetown, No. 7 Colorado and No. 22 Baylor. The men's Blue event features No. 1 Colorado, No. 2 Oregon, No. 21 Southern Utah and No. 26 Furman.

The Bobcat women have been paced in its two meets by freshman and Bozeman product Caroline Hardin. Also looking to contribute on Saturday will be Keely West, Jenette Northey, Rachel Sullivan, Michelle Cline, Rachel Atwood and Louisa Serpe. Freshman Andi Creel will run in the women's 6K open race at 12:05 p.m.
In the most recent NCAA Mountain Region rankings, the Bobcat women moved from eighth to seventh in the rankings, while the MSU men went from 12th to the 11th spot.
Montana State's men's team will be paced by senior Mike Asay and junior Jake Turner. Turner was named Big Sky Conference Runner of the Week after capturing the collegiate crown at the Montana Invitational.
Also running for the Bobcats will be Zach Kughn, Matt Gotta, Ethan Wilhelm and Matthew Tex.
"Zach is the only returner that ran on this course last year," Weese said. "Mike raced the previous year, so they know what to expect. This was one of our better meets last fall, but we have an entirely different team. I'm excited to see how they compete in a meet of this caliber."
Following the Pre-National Invitational, the Bobcats will prepare for the Big Sky Conference Championship, Nov. 1 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
