Bobcat Cross Country Teams at Big Sky Championships

“I believe we’re well prepared,” MSU Assistant Coach/Cross Country Lyle Weese said. “They’re really focused. I fully expect them to have their best meet of the year. They are excited and ready to go.”
The Montana State men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the 2014 Big Sky Conference Championships, Saturday, Nov. 1 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The men's 8K race will begin at 11:30 a.m. (MDT), followed by the women's 5K event at 12:45 p.m. The meet will be held on UND's Ray Richards Golf Course.

Both Bobcat squads will look to better its preseason pick to finish fourth in the Big Sky Conference. The MSU men will have to contend with nationally-ranked Northern Arizona and Southern Utah, while the Montana State women will aim for a runner-up finish behind perennial power Northern Arizona.
The MSU women have held a tight pack all season, but according to Weese will need to move its 1-5 split from 35-seconds down to 25-seconds to be competitive with Weber State, Eastern Washington and Idaho.
Bobcat freshman and Bozeman product Caroline Hardin has paced MSU in all three meets, and has been followed by Keely West, Rachel Sullivan, and Jenette Northey. MSU will also need Michelle Cline, Rachel Atwood or Louisa Serpe to have a solid race and fill the No. 5 slot.
"I think what happens at the 3-4-5 spots will make the difference in scoring well as a team," Weese said. "If you combine that with a 25-second split we could have a spectacular race."
Like the Bobcat women, the MSU men have run a solid top four this season, led by Jake Turner, Mike Asay, Zach Kughn and Matt Gotta. Weese will look to Ethan Wilhelm, Matthew Tex and newcomer Danny Nickles to round out Montana State's scoring.
"We've been training really well," Weese said. "I know Jake is going in with a mindset to get a top 5 finish and Mike has really bounced back this season. Matt Gotta has had a great freshman year and has been very impressive, as well."
Following the Big Sky meet, the Bobcats will prepare for the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, Nov. 14 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
