Brumwell Leads Balanced Attack as Bobcats Pillage Vikings

Montana State senior Ashley Brumwell posted a team-high 18 points to pace four Bobcats in double-figures as MSU cruised to an 89-78 victory over Portland State, Thursday night in Worthington Arena.
Montana State senior Ashley Brumwell posted a team-high 18 points to pace four Bobcats in double-figures as MSU cruised to an 89-78 victory over Portland State, Thursday night in Worthington Arena.
Brumwell, a native of Hamilton, paced Montana State (7-5, 2-1) in the opening stanza with 12 points and finished the game connecting on six-of-13 from the field and five-of-six from the line.
Also in double-digits for MSU were Jasmine Hommes 15, Kalli Durham 15, and Jackie Elliott 14. For the game, the Bobcats shot 51 percent from the field, including a 55 percent effort in the opening period.
"We're doing a lot of things well," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "We're shooting very well, executing and playing unselfish basketball. We also did a nice job of taking care of the ball."
Montana State committed a season-low eight turnovers, including just one miscue in the second half. MSU forced Portland State (4-9, 2-2) into 17 turnovers and 41 percent from the field.
PSU opened the game scoring the first five points, before MSU rattled off a 21-5 run over the next ten-minutes to cruise to a 44-29 halftime lead.
The Bobcats built its largest lead at 60-39 with fifteen-minutes, 17-seconds remaining on a jumper via Margreet Barhoum. PSU whittled the margin down to 11 points with 3:40 left before junior point-guard Ausha Cole nailed a three-pointer from the left wing to put the game away.
Alexa Dawkins and Barhoum led the Bobcat bench and out-scored the PSU subs 19-14. Dawkins finished with eight points and a career-high three blocks, while Barhoum chipped in seven points and a career-high six assists.
Portland State won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding Montana State 44-36. The Bobcats were led under the glass by Elliott 11, and Brumwell nine.
PSU was led in the loss by Allie Brock with 22 points and ten rebounds.
Montana State will host Eastern Washington on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
