MSU struggles in road dual
Montana State Track and Field fell to the Cowboys and Cowgirls of Wyoming at the Powder River Dual in Gillette, Wyo. on Friday afternoon. The Cowboys defeated the Bobcats, 89-61, while the women kept it slightly closer, falling, 86-64, to the Cowgirls.
Despite the scoring differentiation, the Bobcat Men and Women picked up four individual wins in the Friday matinee meet at the Campbell County Recreation Center.
MSU's winners included Kaylee Schmitz in the 800, her first collegiate victory of her career, logging a time of 2:15.31. Amber Amsbaugh's record in the high jump remains unblemished with a win in that event. Casey Teska also represented the jumps well with a win in the pole vault, her second win this year. The sophomore launched herself to a height of 12-05.50 (3.80m) while teammate Libby Madison came in second with 11-03.75 (3.45m), tying her season's best.
On the men's side, Chris Wilson was the day's big victor with two more gold medals to his name in 2014. Thus far he's racked up six wins this year including Friday's victories in the 60m and 200m. His time of 6.89 marks a new season and lifetime best (after adjustment) for the senior sprinter. He crossed the line in 22.04 in the 200. Jacob Kirk, after a breakout week, kept up his momentum with another win in the mile, with a time of 4:12.70.
An interesting note to the day came from Christie Schiel and Trevor Polson in their races. Both are native to the Equality State, especially Polson who hails from Gillette. Schiel was the winner in the mile with a time of 5:10.12. Polson put together an exceptional race in the 3,000 with another top time of 8:26.83.
"Wyoming competed today," said head coach Dale Kennedy, "They defended their home state turf and deserved the wins. We saw some good things out there for us, but it wasn't enough to get the dual win."
MSU will return to Worthington Arena on Friday, Feb. 7 for the Montana State Invitational. The meet is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
