Game Day Notebook: Heat? What Heat?

MSU coach Rob Ash addressed the heat in Dallas by not addressing it
As temperatures hovered one tick below 100 in the time before kickoff of Montana State's game Saturday at SMU in Dallas, and the humidity higher than normal itself, Bobcat coach Rob Ash had an easy way of addressing the heat with his team.
"I won't talk about it," he said. "We've talked about staying hydrated all week, they've been drinking wate and (sports drinks) until they can't stand them any more. I think they'll handle that part ot it fine."
While Ash knew the Bobcats would need to contend with Saturday's heat, he and the team were tossed a curve ball on Friday when the team spent 12 hours in the Bozeman airport due to mechanical and weather-related delays. Ash was pleased with how his team handled that adversity, as well.
""I think the guys handled it extremely well," Ash said. "They stayed positive, didn't get grumpy, they were resilient. That's a word we use a lot, it's one of our core values, and I think they responded positively. Mentally I don't think it will be an issue. But when you don't get to bed until 3 am the night before a game there might be some effect, and I don't know how their bodies will respond."

The Bobcats welcome one special guest to the bench Saturday - last year's Big Sky Defensive MVP Jody Owens. A native of Mesquite, Owens is student-teaching in the Dallas area this year to complete his degree requirements. Ash has long credited Owens for being on the vanguard of Texas talent that helped lead MSU to three straight Big Sky titles.

Ash talked about the conflicting roles of MSU's offense in tonight's game. "It could be a high-scoring game, so we need the offense to score points," Ash said. "But there will be a time when we need to slow the game down, and we'll need to run the ball and control the ball."
