With two weeks of preseason drills completed and one week before the Montana State volleyball team opens its season against Idaho at the University of Wyoming Invitational, Bobcat head coach Kyle Weindel says he’s more than happy with how the team is progressing, which is an especially strong statement considering half the team has never played in a collegiate match.
With two weeks of preseason drills completed and one week before the Montana State volleyball team opens its season against Idaho at the University of Wyoming Invitational, Bobcat head coach Kyle Weindel says he's more than happy with how the team is progressing, which is an especially strong statement considering half the team has never played in a collegiate match.
"I think the team is ahead of where last year's team was at this point, and I think we definitely have the skill and talent to win some matches," Weindel said. "Now, we're trying to get the starting group playing a little more cohesively as a team and build their confidence."
The Bobcats will have a chance to bolster its self-assurance with the annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage, slated for Sunday at 4 p.m. in Shroyer Gym. The scrimmage is free and open to the public. Weindel will hold a brief Volleyball 101 session prior to the start of the match to teach some of the games nuances.
"The scrimmage will be a break from the monotony of practice and training and will showcase what we've learned the last two weeks," Weindel said. "We want to get in front of the community and our supporters. On the court, we're looking for efficient, high-level volleyball."
Montana State recorded a 15-14 overall mark last season and made the Big Sky Conference tournament for the first time since 2005. Weindel returns starting middle blocker Natalee Godfrey and outside hitter Eli Svisco, along with senior libero Nicole Baker. Eight freshmen will look to crack into the Bobcat starting rotation, as well.
MSU opens its season against Idaho at the University of Wyoming Invitational, Friday, August 23 at 11 a.m. In addition to Wyoming and Idaho, MSU will face Drake and Stetson.
