MSU had a nice little run in jersey number 61 in recent years
Every day we look at players who donned the jersey number corresponding to the number of days until the Bobcats open the 2013 season on August 29 against Monmouth. The list of MSU football players by the jersey number is based on preseason rosters. The set of available rosters is complete from 1946-81 and '83-present. Only the 1926-27, 1934, 1937 and 1941 rosters are available in the pre-WWII years. Corrections, additions, or rosters that fill out the set are welcome to blamberty@msubobcats.com.
#61
Richard Hageman, LS: Richard Hageman transferred to MSU from Montana Tech last winter, but is therefore obligated to redshirt in 2013. He is originally from Jordan.
Spotlight Players: What a nice run jersey number 61 enjoyed in the MSU program for the last decade. Jimmy Verlanic landed there innocently enough as a scrappy walk-on in 2004, and by late in his redshirt freshman season – 2005 – he was in the starting lineup. He started off and on as a sophomore, and by his junior season Verlanic was not only a crucial cog in Rob Ash's first offense. Verlanic was firmly lodged as the team's starting center in 2008, but battled injuries throughout the season, and when Alex Terrien took over that role late in the year Verlanic mentored him tirelessly. Those efforts made such an impact on Terrien's career that in 2009, when he replaced Verlanic as the team's starting center, he donned #61 as a tribute. Terrien didn't remain at center, but he was a Second Team All-Big Sky guard in 2010 and a First Team selection in 2011, not coincidentally a pair of conference title runs for the Bobcats. After that 2011 campaign, with Terrien and Conrad Burbank departed, tight end Steven Foster moved to offensive tackle, and as a doff of the cap to both Verlanic – who was a during Foster's redshirt season – and Terrien, Foster snapped up #61. It appears that, as starting offensive linemen go, #61 is taking a temporary hiatus. But among Bobcat faithful this run will not soon be forgotten.
Through the Years: Cal Lorah (1956), Cecil Kent (1957), Arjay Godston (1958-59), Bill Townsend (1960-61), Joe Sutey (1963-64), Buddy Lee (1965), Jay Kosik (1966-67), Rod Purdom (1968), Phil O'Meara (1969), Allen Bone (1970), Brent Spomer (1971), Rod Anardi (1972-73), Jon Kienberger (1974), Mark Allison (1975), Dan Ueland (1976), Derek Wunsch (1977), Scott Sax (1978-80), Brad Garrett (1982), Bob Culliton (1983-85), Fred Roybal (1986), Matt Christensen (1987), Mark Woodcock (1988-91), Ryan Springer (1992), Brian Nell (1993), Blake Reiger (1994-95), Chet Teske (1996), Bill Wilson (1997-98), Cody Van Horn (1999), Jason Richardson (2000-01), Patrick Farraf (2003), Jim Verlanic (2004-08), Alex Terrien (2009-11), Steven Foster (2012)
