Indoor Big Sky Champion to make national title run in the heptathlon
Jeff Mohl knows his strengths and he knows when he should be peaking and he knows that time is right now. After making his first NCAA appearance in the outdoor decathlon in 2012, Mohl is ready to take his dominating career to the national level.
The Red Lodge, Mont. native placed 17th in the decathlon just a hair over nine months ago and with his ninth-place seeding in the heptathlon, he's already ahead of schedule. Mohl opens up the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, March 8, in Fayetteville, Ark.
Most recently, Mohl won the heptathlon at the Big Sky Indoor Championships, hosted by Montana State on Feb. 21-23. Sitting in second throughout most of the two-day extravaganza behind Montana's Austin Emry, Mohl sealed the win in the second to last event. Due to Emry's unprecedented no-height in the pole vault, Mohl was able to blast ahead in scoring, also setting teammate Powhattan Williamson up for a silver medal.
The Mohl-Emry friendly rivalry will take place one more time in Fayetteville, as Emry qualified for Nationals, as well.
Mohl's qualifying score of 5,725 marks a lifetime best and is just one of six PRs he amassed this indoor season (55 dash, pole vault, long jump, shot put and discus).
“I don't think we've yet seen the best that Jeff has to offer,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “He's a smart competitor and is aware of when and where he needs to shine. While it would have been nice to have a few more of our competing and nationals, we're all thrilled that he's representing Montana State.”
The 60 meter dash kicks off the seven-event marathon on day one, followed by the high jump, shot put and long jump. The second day commences with the 60 hurdles, followed by the pole vault and then closes out with the 1,000. Full NCAA Championship information can be found here.
