Montana used a strong block and ball control to post a straight set 25-21, 25-17, 25-17 win over Montana State, Monday night in front of 1,147 fans in Shroyer Gym.
Montana (15-14, 12-8) out-blocked the Bobcats 14-6 and held the Bobcats to a .062 attack percentage.
"Obviously, that's not the way we wanted to go out after playing so well the past few weeks," said MSU head coach Kyle Weindel. "Montana did a nice job defending our point producers and made it very difficult for us. Credit their block for getting it done."
Montana State (6-25, 4-16) was paced by its freshmen outside hitting duo of Loni Kreun and Kennadie Clute, who posted 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Defensively, Bobcat libero Nicole Baker, playing in her final contest in the Blue and Gold, guided MSU with a match-high 14 digs. Baker finished her four years at Montana State with 1,564 career digs, which ranks third all-time on the Bobcat charts.
Freshman Kennadie Clute finished her rookie season with 513 kills, which is the second best mark ever recorded at MSU in a single-season and only the second to go over the 500-kill plateau. Clute led the Big Sky Conference in points and kills this season, and is the top ranking rookie in both categories at the NCAA Division I level.
Not to be overlooked is Kreun, who finished with 339 kills on the season, and becomes one of a handful of freshmen to reach the milestone in their first year with the Bobcats.
"We had a lot of young kids who got a lot of playing time this fall," Weindel said. "We certainly had our ups-and-downs, but the experienced we gained is invaluable. I look forward to winter training and watching our team evolve."
Montana State finished ninth in the Big Sky Conference standings.
