Cats land at seventh in both FCS polls
Saturday's victory was 48 hours old and the next game almost two weeks away, but Monday proved to be a fruitful day for the Montana State football program.
Junior running back and return specialist Shawn Johnson earned FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week honors from The Sports Network, and shared Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week honors (with North Dakota's Greg Hardin), for his performance against 15th-ranked Northern Arizona Saturday. He was also named National Kickoff Returner of the Week by College Football Performance Awards. The national awards were the first for a Bobcat this season.
Johnson answered NAU's only score of the day by returning a third quarter kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, and compiled 246 all-purpose yards on the day, in MSU's victory. Johnson rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown, and also returned three punts for 54 yards. His 924 all-purpose yards on the season is second in the Big Sky, 10th in the FCS, and comes on only 92 attempts.
In addition, cornerback Deonte Flowers was named the top defensive player in the Big Sky by College Sports Madness in its weekly awards. Flowers logged seven tackles with three pass breakups in MSU's win Saturday.
Six Bobcats appear in the top 10 of this week's FCS national statistical rankings. Senior defensive end Brad Daly leads the nation in quarterback sacks (1.5 per game), and is third in the FCS and first in the Big Sky in tackles-for-loss (2.2). Senior running back Cody Kirk is third in the nation and first in the Big Sky in rushing touchdowns (11), while standing ninth nationally and first in the league in scoring (11.3 points per game). Senior receiver Tanner Bleskin is fifth nationally and second in the league with 614 receiving yards, and stands 12th nationally and first in the Big Sky in catches per game (6.8).
In addition to Monday's individual awards, MSU also made ground in one of the two major FCS polls. The Bobcats moved from eighth to seventh in The Sports Network's poll, while holding at seventh in the FCS Coaches Poll.
