2013 season begins for some on Monday
Nine Montana State Student-Athletes will open up the 2013 season a little earlier than the rest, when they compete at the MSU Combined Events Invitational on Monday, Jan. 7, concluding on Jan. 8 at Worthington Arena in Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
MSU returns several veterans in both the men's heptathlon and women's pentathlon. In the heptathlon, Big Sky Conference runner-up at last year's championship meet, Jeff Mohl returns after an impressive junior season and will look to capitalize on the success of 2012. Mohl ranks second in the history of the program in the event with 5,521 points behind 2012 graduate Asa Staven. Staven holds the record both in the program and in the Big Sky with 5,731 points.
Returning for his second year in the multis is Powhattan Williamson who collected ample experience in his rookie season for the Blue and Gold. Williamson currently ranks seventh overall in the Bobcat record books in the heptathlon with 4,614 points.
Kevin Close and Jake Mushaben will also throw their hats into the ring in the heptathlon. Both competed last season in jumps and sprints and will look to build their resume in Worthington Arena on Monday.
Competing in his first meet as a Bobcat will be Shae Stein, a junior transfer from MSU-Billings.
In the women's pentathlon, a quartet of Bobcats are rostered to make their 2013 debut, including a very powerful trio that left a hefty mark in the Big Sky Conference at the Outdoor Championships, just last spring in Bozeman.
Carley McCutchen, who posted huge improvements in outdoor, will look to kick off her junior year in the same fashion. She placed 13th in the pentathlon at the 2012 Big Sky Meet. She placed second in the outdoor heptathlon and big things will be expected from her, after setting the bar pretty high in the spring.
Sarah McGree, a seasoned veteran for Montana State, also returns. The senior ranks third in the program, with 3,741 points, set back in 2011. She also placed third in the outdoor heptathlon behind McCutchen.
Senior Kortnee Barrett will kick off her season, as well, after a much-improved 2012.
Sarah Snoozy is the lone newcomer representing the Blue and Gold. She transferred from Rocky Mountain College.
“It's always good to get that first meet out the way,” said multis coach Tom Eitel. “It gives us a chance to gauge where we are and hopefully see lots of success from the previous season.”
The meet will begin at noon on Monday with the women's 55 hurdles; followed by the men's 55 at 1 p.m. Tuesday is slated for a 10:30 a.m. start with the men's hurdles.
