MSU Open slated for Friday at Brick Breeden
It's week two of the season and the stakes are raised for Montana State Track and Field. The Bobcats will host the MSU Open on Friday, Jan. 25, in hopes of faster times, longer leapers and further throws and most importantly conference qualifying marks.
In the first full week of competition, the Bobcat amassed 24 performances from 19 student-athletes that earned them a place at the 2013 Big Sky Conference Championships, taking place in Bozeman, Feb. 21-23.
“Each week becomes more and more critical in getting these marks,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “We saw some great performances last week but we expect even more as we get deeper into the season and closer to the conference meet.”
In her first meet of the season, and first indoor appearance since 2011, Heather Haug led the way with a record setting mile run in Worthington Arena. Her time of 4:42.70 bested the previous record of 4:44.39, set back in 1988 by Theresa Zacher. Haug is slated to compete in the 800 and 4x400 relay on Friday.
In addition to Haug, MSU only has two other athletes qualified in running events. Katie Niemeir is set in the 55 hurdles, while Heather Demorest is qualified in the mile, 3,000 and 5,000. Haug is qualified in the 3,000 and 5,000, as well.
The field events have seen a lot of success in not a lot of time with six females already qualified for the conference meet. The pole vault has seen the most success thus far with ringleader Rebekka Chambers, in her senior season, along with Libby Madison and newcomer Casey Teska all qualified in the event.
Amber Amsbaugh (high jump), Carley McCutchen (pentathlon) and Kristi VandeBergh (shot put) have also punched their tickets.
On the list of men's qualifiers, 10 are ready to vie for the conference title on their home turf in February. Jeff Mohl is qualified in the heptathlon and individually in the high jump, pole vault and long jump. However, on Friday, he won't be in Bozeman; he'll be in Pullman, Wash. at the Cougar Multis, hosted by Washington State.
Five men are set in running events, including reigning outdoor champions Chris Wilson (100) and Grant Grosvenor (800). Jacob Kirk, who had an outstanding showing in the mile at the MSU Dual Meet Invitational, earned his mark in the event, along with transfer Cristian Soratos. Slater Powell, in his first competition since last year's indoor meet, crossed the finish line fast enough in the 55 hurdles to qualify, as well.
The Bobcat Throwers came out swinging, with three qualified (David Phillips, Sean Ferriter and Trevor Gilreath). Ryan Kropp, who came in second at the outdoor championships last spring, is qualified in the pole vault, after just one competition.
For Friday's meet, many Bobcats will continue the quest with full lineups in most of the events.
Also competing in Bozeman will be several schools from in and around the Treasure State., Carroll, Eastern Washington, Great Falls, MSU-Billings and Rocky Mountain will all be in attendance.
Field and running events will both begin at 4:30 p.m. (Full Schedule)
