UND snaps Bobcat streak with hot shooting
North Dakota used torrid three-point shooting and a game-changing techical foul late in the contest to beat Montana State 86-73 in Grand Forks Saturday.
UND finished the contest 10-for-19 from beyond the three-point circle, with Jamal Webb (5-for-5) leading the way. Yet the Cats remained within a single point with five minutes left. But after baskets by Webb and Jordan Allard pushed North Dakota's lead to five the Bobcat bench was whistled for a technical foul. The ensuing 12-3 run sealed the win for the home team.
The ending brought Montana State's four-game winning streak to an end, and came in spite of a shooting night by Christian Moon that nearly matched Webb's spectacular effort. Moon finished with 21 points on 8-for-15 shooting, including a 5-for-11 night from beyond the arc. Webb finished with 23 points 9-for-11 shooting.
Every time North Dakota threatened to pull away from the Bobcats in the first 35 minutes, MSU answered. UND built the lead to 13 in the first half, but production from big men Paul Egwuonwu and Eric Norman helped trim the lead to two. More hot shooting by Webb got UND to halftime with a nine-point lead.
The second half featured much of the same. UND built an early lead of 10 points, but MSU whittled that margin to one before the late fireworks sealed UND's win. Paul Egwuonwu helped MSU's effort with 16 points, including 8-for-9 from the line, while Marcus Colbert added 11. Aaron Anderson and Troy Huff each scored 20 for UND.
MSU's next outing is at Montana on January 19 at 7:05 pm.
